HealingRain has received sufficient support to be voted Chat Moderator. You can discuss this nomination here.

    Chat Moderators

Chat Moderators are members of the community who have the extra mandate of ensuring that chat stays a healthy environment everyone can enjoy. They have tools to kick people out of chat as warning measures and ban people for a lengths of time appropriate to the offense/number of previous bans.

Those with Chat Moderators rights are able to do the following:

    • Kick someone from the chat room
    • Ban someone from the chat room

    Chat Moderator User Conduct

    Chat moderator are expected to:

    • Help users in chat to the best of their ability and answer questions(both in main chat and Personal Messages).
    • Ensure those policies are followed
    • Warn someone before banning(kicks count as warnings)
    • Write an explanation as to the nature of the ban and it's length on the person's message wall
    • Chat Moderators need to show maturity. This includes quality edits, courtesy, and refraining from heavily roleplaying (like wiki "marriage", indulging in "violent acts" toward another user, etc ...)
    • Chat Moderators are expected to show good behavior both here and on other Wikis. As their conduct will be associated with this wiki, a block or ban on another Wiki as much as here could lead to demotion without further notice.

    Discussion Procedure

    • Within 24 hours of opening the discussion, the nominee must post a comment providing information as to why s/he is interested in the position and what qualifications s/he has for the role.
    • Within 48 hours of opening the discussion, the staff member who provided the Chat Mod voucher for the candidate must post a comment providing information as to why s/he supports the candidacy.
    • Anyone is allowed to ask questions to the candidate.
    • Questions must be clear AND related to the Chat Moderator's job.
    • The candidate is expected to answer pertinent questions.
    • RESPECT shall be the word of order at all time. Not agreeing with the candidate being possibly promoted does not allow someone to disrespect that person.
    • A failure from the candidate to answer a question for more than 24hrs during the discussion (candidate shall be asked for availability before-hand) will result in a cancellation of the upcoming vote.
    • After the community discussion has been open for 7 days, one of the current administrators will open the Voting Process, wherein community members can indicate whether they support or oppose the candidacy.

This discussion will remain open until the end of the day on October 26, 2014 (23:59:59 UTC).

    • Hello everyone, I provided the admin vouch for HealingRain.

Among the reasons why I vouched for her are because every time I've seen her in chat and on the wiki she has been kind, polite, and has had good intentions. After being parts of conversations with her in chat and seeing her also talking to other people on the wiki and in chat I am able to tell that she is hardworking, persistent in what she does, and genuinely a good and honest person.

At this time I expect that to continue, and if a mistake may be made (and it is possible one may not be made), then she will learn from it.

I know the last time the process did not work out for her, but since then through conversation in chat and on wiki I think she has grown both on the wiki and off wiki and will be a good chat moderator.

Now to ask some questions, like I do in each nomination discussion:

      1) If someone is not following the chat policies or wiki policies in chat what would be something you may say or do?

      2) Same question, but what if it were a friend violating the rules or policies?

      3) How would you respond if multiple users came into chat and started breaking rules? This may a little overwhelming of an experience, but thinking about the possibility could help prepare for it in case it happens.

That is all I have for now. Good luck.

    • I nominated rain beacuse i trust that she will use the rules to protect the chat to the best of her ability. I've know her for a while, she has seen my good and my bad side, and we know my bad side is bad, she can handle that with a clam head and speak rationaly when this happens, i belive rain will be a great chat mod good luck!

        Loading editor
    • Yay questions ^.^

      1) If someone weren't following the rules, I would calmly tell them to stop what they're doing and warn them that if they don't stop, they'll be issued a kick.I would warn them a second time and if they broke the rules a third time, I would kick them. If the kick doesn't work, they'll eventually be banned according to the severity of the rule breaking.

      2) If it were a friend, the same rules as above would apply. I'm big on fairness and if my friend were breaking the rules, I'd have to treat them the same way I would a rule breaker. Just because they're my friend doesn't mean that I'll let them slide and get away with breaking the rules.

      3) If multiple users came into chat and sarted breaking the rules I would issue a verbal warning before giving them kicks and ban them all if they don't stop. Though it is overwhelming, I'd rather have others in chat feel safe and not feel scared to come into or stay in chat just because of spammers or anyone who would want to ruin the fun atmosphere of chat.

Hope I answered your questions ;3

    • I have no concerns about Rain right now, and I won't have any about her later either. She has grown from her mistakes and would be a sutible candidate for chat mod. She has the humour, the intelligence, and the seriousness to act when needed. Overall, she would make a good mod for the community.

    • I vouched for Rain because I feel she would be a great fit for the position. She is is respectful and mature and follows the rules. She's been a long time chat member and every time in chat she's been kind and polite. I know she has good character and integrity. I think she has grown greatly since the last nominations and will be an excellent chat moderator. Good luck.

    • I believe that HealingRain has what it takes to become a good Chat Mod. When I've seen her in chat, she has always been polite and respectful and I believe this role will help her use these qualities to help our community better. After reviewing her answers I still stand by my belief of her making a good Chat Mod. Good luck Rain :)

    • I think HealingRain will become a good chat moderator. Every time I've seen her in chat, she has been kind and polite. If she becomes a chat moderator I believe she will enforce the rules for the chat. By now I don't have any questions for her. Good luck, Rain! :)

    • I think Rain is a good user. Without the rights, she was always good and accept all rules. With the rights, she will be good and accepts the rules with rights ^.^ nothing would change, except she will use her rights only for good, so I agree :) Good luck, Rain! ;)

    • I believe that HealingRain possesses both the knowledge and experience required for the Chat Moderator position. She has been a user on the wiki for quite some time and I believe she is ready to take the next step on her wiki journey. That being said, I have one underlying concern. From what I can tell, she is "away" quite a bit due to multi-tasking the chat with her University studies. Given the choice, would you rather be a Chat Moderator who is away during a "chat attack" or a Chat Moderator who is not present at all? I'm just curious where you stand in terms of a user being "Chat Moderator Scarecrow" so to speak. That is, hoping the "presence" of a Chat Moderator encourages good behaviour.

        Loading editor
    • A "Chat Moderator Scarecrow"? In all my experiences Rain has, in fact, been in chat and not "away" as you say. Just because it shows as "away" doesn't mean she is actually away, and if, in the rare occasion, she does happen to be "away" she always tells us that she is going to be back in a few minutes. All the "away" really means is that the user has not said anything in main chat for a few minutes. In addition, there's plenty of other mods that will most likely be present as well to handle such a seldom "chat attack". She may be "off and on" chat for an hour while she is completing her homework, but this just shows the determination she has to not be "away" for the majority of the day. Everytime I've seen during this "off and on" period, either I, or another moderator has been present in chat. I do not see this being an issue.

        Loading editor
    • I agree with Awesome, and most of the time that I am "away" from chat, I'm sitting at my computer monitor doing homework and I always say before I go away, "Ping me if you need me" and once I hear the ping I immediately go back into chat, regardless of the situation.

I do always try to stay active in chat and for the most part am paying attention. Regardless if I'm away doing my homework, I have the chat open and do pay attention to what's going on. If I do have to do my homework, I get it done and out of the way early so that my tendency to go "away" and not talk for a few minutes at a time decreases and the amount I spend actively participating in chat increases.

Also, if there are times where I do go away, there is always a chat moderator present and active and ready to handle a situation in my place if I'm not able to be there.

I see nothing wrong with multi-tasking chat and homework, there are oftentimes I've seen other members of the community including staff doing the same such as multi-tasking chat and updating the wiki information.

    • I agree with everyone else. Healing Rain would make an excellent chat moderator because she's very polite and knows what to do.

Oops, sorry. i didn't notice that part, but anyway I don't have any questions for now.

    • i would agree with you awesome except for the last "chat attack" that happened when she was a trail chat mod and she did nothing to prevent it except send a smiley face as it happened. She did do well in banning people during as spam attack that happened when her and wolfie there so i give her some credit. But instead of arguing why doesnt she just answer the question that was asked twice already and ignored both times.

        Loading editor
    • I opposed Rain the last time she went through the discussion and voting. I had my personal reasons for doing so. I was present during the "spam attack" Bre mentioned. Both Rain and Wolfie were present but I had to reach out to a chat mod who was not on... Rain was not the only one at fault there. That doesn't even matter to me anymore, Rain has since apologized to me for that and I no longer hold her at fault for what happened or didn't happen. The past is the past, people change. They learn and grow from their mistakes.

As for her being "afk"... I have PMed her a lot when she is "afk" and we've had lengthy conversations while she is still "afk". From my experience, and I am not trying to speak for her, she is just a ping away most of the time. If she does step away from the computer she announces that and if it is for any good length of time, she leaves chat. There has been, in my opinion, a lot of unnecessary drama when it comes to staff positions and even tension between staff members (and the community at times) and I have decided to step away from participating in anything staff related. However, I don't think it's fair to hold the past against someone. I think one should be "judged" based on the present and what they have learned from the past. I think Rain has matured and has grown from what has happened in the past. I think Rain will make a good chat mod and should be given the chance to prove herself.

    • To answer your hypothetical question Andy, I must look at it from both sides.

First off, a chat moderator who is away from chat during a chat attack should be able to be easily reached by pings. By now, I believe we all know I have pings, so even if I was away during an attack, someone could ping "Rain" and I'd be right there. Second of all, there are more chat mods than just me, so even if I were away, I'm 100% sure Wolfie and Awesome would be available in my place if something like this happened.

Now for the second segment of your question. Not being in chat at all. Look, no one can be in chat 24/7, I know we all know this. Things happen in life and we can't tell the future and see if we'll be available to go onto chat tomorrow or two years from now, it just isn't possible. Even if a chat attack happened and I just so happened to be gone from chat for that day, how would that be my fault? I couldn't help that I was out of chat during that particular moment, and the same goes for being afk. I can't help that life can get in the way of being in chat, but I try my hardest every single day to be in chat and be active despite all of the things that life happens to throw at me.

I hope this answers your question.

Thank you! I was just trying to making it clear that there's nothing wrong with opting out of the chat if one is extremely busy. I personally prefer to only be on the chat when I can provide it with my undivided attention.

    • Past events should not be a deciding factor, in this vote or in everyday life. It should be how they dealt with those past experiences and how they learned from them that defines a person and their character. People learn from their mistakes. I have faith in Rain that if a "chat attack" were to happen she would be able to handle it. She has without a doubt grown and matured since back then and I have no doubt that she would be able to enforce the chat policies without an issue.

Personally, I feel like these rationalizations are just disingenuous. Rain is on chat a lot more than other users, and is actively engaging in chat while she's in it. Everyone has virtues and Rain proudly stands by hers. She stands by her beliefs and doesn't criticize others for not following any traits that she, herself, does not possess. It is this character that is respectable and admirable and is what role models should be made of.

    • I know in discussions people are not always going to agree with one point of view and have different opinions. Often this is good and can it can be healthy so issues and information can be talked about and learned from.

While, it is good to discuss things in the past so we can learn from, hence history courses and museums, some things seem to be better left in the past when they've already been exhausted and provide very little or no benefit in being brought up again.

There was an incident months ago while Rain was on a trial period, and an unforeseen event happened while she was in chat and unable to address the issue. She has learned from that incident in the past and has grown from it.

Multiple community members who have spent considerable time with her in chat and on wiki since then have stated this above in the discussion.

That being said, in regards to some other things being said, almost everyone I've talked to in chat has performed multitasking. This is including current staff members who have no issue moderating chat as well.

Sometimes if something requires a lot of focus it may be good to leave chat until more focus can be provided, but that is really up to the preferences of the chat moderator.

Not everyone will perform the same way, but at times there are multiple ways to be successful at the same task.

In a worse case scenario, if someone is chosen to be a chat moderator by the community, and it doesn't work out, there is a demotion process available on wiki to use.

I personally don't think we'd need to use it on Rain, and she deserves a chance to prove herself.

She has grown a lot since the incident and from the incident, so to keep bringing up that incident multiple times isn't beneficial to anyone.

Sorry if this post is repetitive. It is longer than I intended, and it is very late where I am so it may not be as concise as it could be.

I feel like this question is being taken way out of context. The past was only brought up by users other than the one asking the question, the candidate's character was never brought up, and the activity comment (i.e. being "away") was confirmed by other particpants in the discussion including the candidate herself. That being said, we shouldn't discourage users from asking questions seeing as this is a discussion after all. I also have faith that HealingRain is perfectly capable of answering questions on her own. We should give her an opportunity to reply before replying on her behalf.

    • If I'm even allowed to provide my opinion in this thread since I haven't been registered for very long .....but it seems to me that the more role redundancy the better chances to stave off an attack since there are more people available to respond to issues- and as far as whatever happened before, stuff happens- maybe I don't understand the long term impact or risk of a similar incident but come on......it's chat- not a reactor meltdown. Or maybe I just don't get it.

I, nor anyone, was replying on her behalf. I was just stating my opinion and tried to clear up any falsities that may have put placed on Rain. If it seems that I was replying for her, then I apologize, as that was not my intention at all.

    • falsities? Not to be rude, but how would you know what i said was false if you weren't there in chat at the time?

Quite frankly if you ask me -- but no one ever does, because im apparently just a liar-- ya'll are being a bit biased, everyone who has come to her defese has some sort of relationship with her, and you want to over look her flaws. the only reason i brought up past events is because everyone wants to just forget about it and make her look like a freaking angel when she isn't. you think im kidding but im not, the same thing happened to me when i was nominated for chat mod so dont think im saying im perfect or something. and you can get angry and frustrated all you want because i dont see her the way you do but honestly i really dont give a darn because if i were to really tell ya how i felt about her you could get ticked and be defensive all over again. And it's called criticism, it's in everyday life and she needs to learn to get over it, so stop babbying her and let her handle it herself awesome, for god sakes she's in freaking university

That being said, i think Rain would be a good chat mod

        Loading editor
    • First of all, the "falsities" I am speaking of are when she is apparently "away" or whatnot in chat when she is actually engaging in chat, not the chat attack situation. I wasn't implying that you are a "liar" or anything of the sorts either. I am not in any means trying to say that she's an "angel", or insinuate that Rain doesn't have any faults. Rain is not perfect. No one is. We've all made our mistakes. I'm not trying to deny in any means that it wasn't Rain's or any other mod's fault that the attack happened and was not handled. The point I was trying to make is that she has grown from that experience and has learned from those very mistakes. We're not over looking her flaws, as some have been brought up, addressed, and resolved.

I agree with criticism. Although I do wish it would be done in a more constructive manner in this case. I find it funny how you think I am "babying" her, I am just providing my own viewpoint, is that not allowed? Discussions should be a place where everyone feels comfortable and not a place where users feel like they're not even allowed to provide their own opinion. While there are members of the community who do know Rain on a friendly level, I don't feel that we were attempting to "speak" for her and certainly not put any words into her mouth. We were just trying to justify the Rain we see on chat and on the wiki, no bias involved. She's doing a fine job handling it herself, as you can see above, and I'm not trying to take away from that. Again just providing my own opinions.

On a side note, I did find it kind of rude that you would infer to my post, when what I was saying wasn't in regards to the "chat attack" instance.

        Loading editor
    • Oi, did we say you were a liar, Bre? No, we didn't. And before trying to bring up the past by trying to make HealingRain guilty, nobody's an angel brought down from heaven. Frankly, I don't care about what relationships the candidate has with her fellow users. From what I've seen, she's one of the candidates with the least babying...

    • I do not know if I am even allowed my input on this topic, but from what I have seen of Rain in the chat, she would be a good mod. She is fair, and is willing to help people with problems they may have.

The one thing that worries me though, is that if a mod appears to be "away" would that not encourage spammers to cause trouble? If Rain(or any other mod who is afk)for some reason does not hear the 'ping' there would be no mod to help. I know that when I'm focused on something, sometimes I completely tune out chat. I'm not saying this will happen with Rain, I'm just saying it is a possibility.

Anyone may add their opinion. That's what discussions are for.

That can be said for any chat mod, not just Rain. There are also chat mods who do not have pings (and I am in no way suggesting we make that a requirement)... there are a lot of things that could happen, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't allow a qualified candidate to "prove" themselves. Just because we fear the worst doesn't mean we stop moving forward and taking the chances and risks associated with life.

Rain has answered all questions posed to her, as far as I can tell. Just because someone states their own opinion and observation about something does not mean they are speaking or answering for anyone.

    • Just for the record, anyone on wiki can participate in any discussion unless it specifically says at the bottom of the opening message it is only for staff.

It is staff votes which require users be registered on the wiki at least one month prior to help reduce the chance of possible sockpuppets and possible abuse of multiple new accounts created during a vote to try to sway it.

To answer your question as honestly as I possibly can Pixystix, the truth of the matter is I want to be a chat moderator because there's no greater thrill to me than helping someone in chat, be it giving them some sort of information about the wikia or a specific dragon or even to just make them feel better after they've had a long stressful day and all they want is a friendly conversation with someone.

There is a lot of responsibility as a chat mod I agree and there's no pay and long hours, but to me, the added responsibility doesn't dissuade me one bit. I've always loved to help people and loved to help them feel welcome at all times in chat. Granted, no one is perfect. Not even me. There's no guarantee that everyone is going to be happy with me, and that's fine. Sometimes people can be harsh in their criticisms which is perfectly okay, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I do at least deserve a chance to prove to this community that I have what it takes to be a chat moderator.

All I've ever wanted to truly do as a chat moderator is to make it so that people can enjoy a quiet, peaceful place to relax. Though the chat can sometimes be a noisy and crowded place, that's all part of the fun of this community's chat. I want to make the chat a fun and safe place for everyone, no matter if they're a new user or a regular user.

I hope I have answered your question ^.^.

I honestly agree with what Rain said. She is wonderful at helping people out if they need it, and is always pleasant to have a chat with. She isn't in it for the "money" but for the pleasure that comes from helping others. I think she would make a great chat mod.
