The Thorn Dragon can be bred by using any two dragons, in either order, containing the Metal and Plant elements at any Breeding Cave.
Breeding Opposites
Breeding a Plant Dragon or a Metal Dragon with an Thorn Dragon will only result in a Metal Dragon, a Plant Dragon, a Malachite Dragon, a Razortail Dragon, an Ironwood Dragon, or a Thorn Dragon.

Notes
- On February 4, 2015, the Thorn Dragon's spot appeared in the Dragonarium, even though it had not been officially released into DragonVale yet.
- In addition to its affiliated decoration, the Thorn Dragon was released along with the Berrywhite Bench, Thorn Pedestal, Unhatched Thorn Dragon, Path of Petals, Omnitat, the Rosefall Tree, and the Rosefall Island.
- During The Gathering of Roses, the Thorn Dragon was the third and fifth rewards collected by accumulating a total of 1,375 and 1,925, respectively, totaling to 3,300.
- When a certain amount of roses were collected and turned in at the Rosefall Tree, a message card would pop up to inform players that the Thorn Dragon could be collected from the "Gifts" section in the Social Menu. When a player collected the Thorn Dragon from the section, the egg was placed directly into the nursery. Players then had an option to hatch, display, or sell the Thorn Dragon.
- On February 13, 2015 during The Gathering of Roses, the required individual cost for the second Thorn Dragon changed from 1,660 to 1,925.
- The overall cost to obtain all the rewards in The Gathering of Roses event remained at 5,500 roses.
- The change was noticed on February 12, 2015, but the menus in the game were not officially changed until the next day.
- The Thorn Dragon did not have a goal when it was first released.
- The Thorn Dragon got a goal when it was re-released on December 10, 2015.
- On March 25, 2019, the Thorn Dragon was changed from limited to permanent. It remained in the Vernal category and was also added to the corresponding Elemental categories in the dragonarium.
