What happened is an update to COPPA that came into effect on June 1 that states that sites are not to collect IP addresses from minors. Given that MediaWiki uses IP addresses to track edits from anonymous users (because each and every edit and comment must be attributed to the person that made it), Wikia decided to play it safe and turn off anonymous editing on any and all wikis that were deemed to attract a large underage audience, such as ours.
