In order to breed dragons, players must have an available Breeding Cave; either the starting breeding cave/Enchanted Breeding Cave, the Co-operative Breeding Cave (unlocked at level 10), the Epic Breeding Island/Epic Breeding Sanctuary (125), or the Rift Breeding Cave (unlocked at level 28).
There are some factors that can affect the results when breeding for a certain dragons:
- The elements which are present in the breeding pair of dragons. When breeding an Epic Dragon, they typically have hidden elements which contribute to the results.
- Time of day. Certain Dragons can only be bred during a certain time of day.
- The Sun Dragon, Dawn Dragon, Midday Dragon, and Lightmatter Dragon require it to be daytime in the park.
- The Moon Dragon, Dusk Dragon, Nosferatu Dragon, Midnight Dragon, Misfortune Dragon, and Darkmatter Dragon require it to be nighttime in the park.
- The weather. Certain dragons require a specific weather in order to be bred/evolved.
- The Tranquil Dragon requires the Blossoms weather in order to be bred.
- The Moriante Dragon requires the Fireflies weather in order to be bred.
- The Aubergine Dragon can only be evolved when it is raining in your park.
- Parent requirements. Certain dragons, especially gemstone dragons and event dragons, require there to be specific dragon(s) present in the breeding combination.
- Some dragons, such as the Clover Dragon, Nature Dragon, and Bearded Dragon, require one specific parent dragon to be in the combination.
- Other dragons, such as the Mesmer Dragon, Ikatako Dragon, Nightmare Dragon, and Gemstone Dragons, only have one possible breeding combination.
- Breeding Cave used. Certain Dragons can only be bred in specific breeding caves.
- Galaxy Dragons, except for the Solis Dragon, Lunis Dragon, and Rigel Dragon, can only be bred in the Co-operative Breeding Cave.
- Rift-Exclusive dragons can only be bred in the Rift Breeding Cave.
- Level of the parents. The higher the level of the dragon(s) used for breeding, the better the chances of breeding a Rare, Epic or event dragon.
- Base breeding rate of target dragon. Each dragon has a different base percent rate to be bred. Most dragon base rates can be found on the DECA forum page.
- Epic Dragons and Gemstone Dragons usually have a much lower base breeding rate (usually between 0.5% and 2.5%) than permanent hybrid and rare dragons, and typically have a 1% chance to be cloned through the Co-operative Breeding Cave.
- Event rare dragons usually have a lower base breeding rate (usually between 2% and 4%) than permanent hybrid and rare dragons, although usually have a 10% chance to be cloned through the Co-operative Breeding Cave (there are some exceptions, such as the Keyper Dragon at a 1% clone rate and the Quintessence Dragon with a 1.5% clone rate).
- If you already own the dragon. Some dragons, especially those with easily replicable breeding requirements such as the Aurora Dragon, and Celtic Dragon, have a less likely chance to be bred if the player already owns the dragon.
- For example, the Enfis Dragon has a 4% chance to be bred if it is unowned, but only a 1% chance to be bred if it is already owned.
Note:
The order of the dragons being bred does NOT affect the result.
How to Breed[]
To breed, tap on the Breeding Cave, Enchanted Breeding Cave, Epic Breeding Island, or the Epic Breeding Sanctuary, which will glow. Then, tap on the "Breed" button, and a menu with two sides, "Dragon one", and "Dragon two", will open. Dragons will be available for Breeding once they are at level four or higher, and incompatible or unbreedable dragons will be "greyed out". Players must select one dragon on either side. Once the dragons are selected, press the "Breed" button at the lower center of the menu. To use the same pair of dragons used in the most recent Breeding attempt, press the "Retry" button and confirm the re-use of the dragons.

Breeding Hints[]
Breeding Hints Button |
Breeding hints are available in the Breeding toolbar to be viewed after tapping on the Breeding Cave/Enchanted Breeding Cave, and the Epic Breeding Island/Epic Breeding Sanctuary.
- A list of dragons and information about which dragons and/or elements are needed to breed appears, when this section is selected.
- Unlocked breeding hints will appear in the form of an equation.
- Some of the breeding hints can be unlocked by using gems.
- The breeding hints that are locked varies among players.
- Breeding hints can be unlocked without using gems by Breeding two of the dragon.
Opposite Dragons[]
Dragons with opposite elements that cannot be directly bred with each other:
- Plant and Ghostly Plant Dragons cannot be bred with a Metal Dragon.
- Fire, Ghostly Fire , and Dargon Dragons cannot be bred with Cold or Ghostly Cold Dragons.
- Earth and Ghostly Earth Dragons cannot be bred with an Air Dragon.
- The Lightning Dragon cannot breed with a Water Dragon.
- The Light Dragon cannot breed with a Dark Dragon.
Opposite dragons are any hybrid dragon which includes two elements that are incompatible with each other. Due to the circumstances needed to breed them, opposite dragons, including "hybrid" ones are always Rare. They include:
- Blue Fire Dragon
- Frostfire Dragon
- Fever Dragon
- Flickerflame Dragon
- Sandstorm Dragon
- Dodo Dragon
- Whirlwind Dragon
- Khamsin Dragon
- Plasma Dragon
- Current Dragon
- Surge Dragon
- Malachite Dragon
- Ironwood Dragon
- Thorn Dragon
- Razortail Dragon
- Iron Blossom Dragon
- Dartwing Dragon
- Spore Dragon
- Mirage Dragon
- Shadow Dragon
- Silverline Dragon
- Ghast Dragon
- Antumbra Dragon
- Lacuna Dragon
- Nox Dragon
All opposite dragons must be bred with a primary element dragon and a secondary element hybrid dragon.
Note: Breeding an opposite dragon with a primary element dragon can result in either a Primary Dragon or another opposite dragon. For example, breeding an Antumbra Dragon with a Light Rift Dragon in the Rift Breeding Cave can result in a Light Dragon, Dark Dragon, Light Rift Dragon, Dark Rift Dragon, Antumbra Dragon, Ghast Dragon, Shadow Dragon, Silverline Dragon, Mirage Dragon, or Yolkwing Dragon (as the Antumbra Dragon has the Dark trait).

Notes[]
- The Epic Breeding Island, and the Epic Breeding Sanctuary are not absolutely necessary to successfully breed any dragon. It only grants the player a slight increase to the probability of Breeding epic dragons, opposite dragons, limited dragons and some other dragons. The greatest benefit is allowing the player to breed two sets of dragons at any given time.
- Gemstone dragons and Crystalline dragons cannot breed with any other dragons, even another of the same type, except during special events such as the Shimmering Solstice.
- Legendary Dragons and Mythic Dragons cannot be bred; they are obtained by collecting various artifacts.
- As a result, these dragons are the only dragons without an egg pedestal.
- On June 27, 2013, filter buttons were added to the Breeding menu to sort dragons by elements.
- A message will pop up on the screen for players if they do not have enough room to place an egg after the dragons have finished Breeding.
- Previously, if a player sped up Breeding and had a Nursery full of eggs, the game would deduct gems from the player to complete the breeding, but the egg would not enter the Nursery because it was full. This rule was changed on an unknown date; now it is not possible to speed up Breeding using gems if the Nursery is full of eggs.
- The message card was updated on an unknown date to include the sentence "We're sorry!".
- On June 27, 2013, the "Breed" button received its own unique sound effect upon clicking it.
- On June 27, 2013, a "Retry" button was added for players trying to get a specific dragon.
- This option allows users to breed with the same two dragons used most recently. A confirmation message pops up on the screen for players to double check the two dragons that were bred.
- The option is not available if the dragons that were used previously are entered in a different Breeding habitat, is competing in the Colosseum, is on a quest or is moved into the Hibernation Cave.
- On August 22, 2013, the "Breeding Hints" button was added for players to gain access to hints for Breeding dragons.
- On August 22, 2013, the "Help" button that was added for players to look at helpful hints, included a couple of hints specifically regarding Breeding.
- As of Update 2.0, Breeding two of the same dragon will NOT guarantee that dragon. For users who have suggestions on ways that Backflip Studios can enhance alternative Breeding options, they have provided a special email address: DVBreeding@backflipstudios.com.
- When Epic dragons are bred, they exhibit latent, non-epic elements. For example, the Seasonal Dragon is treated as a Fire, Air and Plant hybrid when bred with other dragons. Following these parameters, there are five dragons which are treated as 10-element hybrids when bred: the Rainbow Dragon, the Leap Year Dragon, the Aurora Dragon, the Double Rainbow Dragon and the Dream Dragon. When these dragons are bred together, it is possible to achieve any dragon in the game except for Primary dragons, Gemstone/Crystalline dragons, and dragons that require specific dragons to be bred (e.g. Gourd Dragon).
- It has been confirmed that higher level dragons have better Breeding odds, i.e. better chances of breeding rare dragons.
