Friends are an easy way to earn gems. The more friends you have the more gems you are are likely to recieve. If you add friends to your game center account and they also play DragonVale, they will be added to your friends list in DragonVale as well.
You can also visit each others dragon parks and see what kind of dragons they have. Every 24 hours you will see a party hat above your friends dragon habitats (image to the right), if you tap on them you will recieve a small amount of dragoncash (depends on your level).There will only be 3 or less party hats per friend. One drawback is that some of your friends might be impatient and want gems everyday, yet you can only send 3 gems per 24 hours. This can be changed if you have the Dragonsai Gem Tree which enables you to send 6 gems per 24 hours.
For anyone having trouble with GameCenter not publishing friends to your DragonVale list, simply power-cycling your device helps.
For those of you who are unsure how to add people to your friend list, please refer to this. You may want to keep track of who is giving you gems so you can return the favor. However, if you receive too many gems at one time, you will get a message like user1, user2, user3, user4, and others gave you gems and you won't be able to tell who gave you the other gems. Hopefully Backflip will add support for gem tracking in a future version so you can keep track of not only who gave you gems but how many they gave you.
NOTE: If you are not able to give a gem to your friends after the 24 hour period (it is greyed out), you may need to restart the DragonVale application. Simply click the home button twice on the iOS device to show the running applications and then hold your finger down on the DragonVale icon until it starts to wiggle and has a red minus sign on it. Then press the red minus sign to close it. Then just open DragonVale again from the main application page and then you will be able to give to that friend.
