How Breeding Works
The Basics
In DragonVale, breeding works by combining the elements of two dragons (the breeding pair or breeding combination) which forms the "breeding pool" of elements. Each dragon has base elements seen in the game as well as latent breeding elements which are not displayed in game. These elements combine to create the breeding pool. The breeding pool, in addition to other constraints, is used to determine outcome dragons from a particular combination. Other constraints include requirement of specific elements, requirement of specific dragons, requirement of minimum elements in the pool, the time of day, or even the weather in the park.
Cloning
Breeding two of the same dragon together is called Cloning. Because of the Parent Rule, parent dragons are typically a result in breeding results. Cloning can help reduce the number of "fails" or undesired dragons when breeding for a specific dragon.
Latent Elements
- Every epic dragon carry latent (or "hidden") breeding elements which are contributed to the breeding pool. To see the full list, visit Epic Dragons Latent Elements.
- During the Shimmering Solstice, Gemstone Dragons and Crystalline Dragons gain the ability to breed. They similarly contribute latent elements to the pool. To see the full list, visit Gemstone and Crystalline Dragons Latent Elements.
Breeding Hints
Every breedable dragon has a breeding hint which tells the player how it can be bred. The breeding combination is denoted in the hint, as well as any other constraints for that dragon.
Breeding Caves
Certain dragons can only be bred in certain breeding locations. There are three main breeding types: Normal, Cooperative, and Rift.
- The Breeding Cave and Epic Breeding Island (and their upgraded varients) are the Normal type.
- The Cooperative Breeding Cave is the Cooperative type and is required for most Galaxy Dragons.
- The Rift Breeding Cave is the Rift type and is required for Rift Dragons.
At times, additional breeding locations become available to use, such as during special events.
Breeding Odds
The number of resulting dragons from a breeding pair does not affect the chances of breeding a dragon. Chances are determined by breeding odds, not by number of results. Each breedable dragon contains a base breeding odds value which indicates the percent chance of being bred.
The breeding odds can change depending on a few factors:
- How many of the specific dragon result you own,
- The breeding location,
- The breeding pair of dragons (for cloning).
Dragon Levels
As the player levels up their dragons, their base breeding odds increase. This means you have a higher chance to breed rare or epic dragons the higher the parents' levels are.
Breeding Rules
Breeding rules are a set of restrictions dragons follow when breeding. Some of the rules depend on the dragon's hint, and can be combined with other rules.
Breeding Compatability
Not all dragons can breed. There are a few notable cases:
- Gemstone Dragons and Crystalline Dragons cannot normally breed. During the Shimmering Solstice, they are able to breed for a limited time.
- Legendary Dragons and Mythic Dragons cannot breed.
- Primaries of opposite elements can't breed together (e.g. Plant + Metal is invalid).
Other dragons cannot be bred. This includes:
- Legendary Dragons and Mythic Dragons cannot be bred, only summoned.
- Evolved dragons cannot be bred, only evolved from a base dragon after satisfying certain requirements.
Parent Rule
The parent rule states that either parent in a breeding pair can be a breeding result. This can be used to breed any expired limited dragon as long as your target is one of the parents. In other words, there is always a chance for either parent dragon.
- This does not apply to Gemstone Dragons or Crystalline Dragons as they cannot normally breed.
Availability Rule
Some dragons can only be bred for a limited time. This may be due to various reasons such as a commemoration or holiday. Expired dragons cannot be bred (except if following the Parent Rule). To breed available dragons you need to follow their hint.
Breeding Pool Rule
Normally, dragons can only be a result of a breeding pair if their elements are contained within the breeding pool. For example, breeding Plant + Fire cannot result in any dragons which do not have the plant and fire elements (except if bypassed by a breeding hint).
Opposites Rule
Opposite Dragons have special circumstances required to meet the elements. Opposites (Ironwood, Blue Fire, etc) require the Primary dragon of their primary element and a hybrid containing their secondary element and at least one other (non-primary) element (e.g. Plant + Chrome can make Ironwood because Ironwood's primary element is plant (which the Plant Dragon satisfies) and the Chrome dragon contains the metal element (Ironwood's secondary element) and the air element (a non-primary because Ironwood does not have the air element)).
Required Elements Rule
Certain dragons require a specific set of elements present in the breding pool in order to be bred, even if it doesn't contain those elements itself.
Required Dragons Rule
Certain dragons require specific parents in order to be bred. If both parents are required, then only that one breeding combination will work.
Required Parent Elements Rule
Certain dragons require both of the parents to have a certain element in order to be bred. This is the case for Snowflake and Monolith, as well as Rigel Dragon.
Minimum Elements Rule
Certain dragons require a minimum count of unique elements in the breeding pool. These can be any elements as long as greater or equal to the minimum amount required.
Time of Day Rule
Certain dragons can only be bred during a certain time of the day. If you do not have the Twilight Tower, the time of day depends on your device's internal clock. Otherwise, the time of day is overridden by the Twilight Tower's current setting.
- The Sun Dragon must be bred during the Day (7am - 7pm).
- The Dawn Dragon must be bred during the Day (7am - 7pm).
- The Midday Dragon must be bred during the Day (7am - 7pm).
- The Lightmatter Dragon must be bred during the Day (7am - 7pm).
- The Moon Dragon must be bred during the Night (7pm - 7am).
- The Dusk Dragon must be bred during the Night (7pm - 7am).
- The Nosferatu Dragon must be bred during the Night (7pm - 7am).
- The Midnight Dragon must be bred during the Night (7pm - 7am).
- The Misfortune Dragon must be bred during the Night (7pm - 7am).
- The Darkmatter Dragon must be bred during the Night (7pm - 7am).
Weather Rule
Certain dragons can only be bred during a certain weather. If you do not have the Weather Station, the weather is set to None, making these dragons not possible to breed without the station.
- The Moriante Dragon must be bred during Fireflies.
- The Tranquil Dragon must be bred during Blossoms.
Breeding Caves
Cooperative Breeding
Cooperative Breeding at the Cooperative Breeding Cave follows the same rules as regular breeding. To breed at the Cooperative Breeding Cave, you must breed one of your dragons with a friend's dragon.
This can be an effective way to breed limited expired dragons if you following the Parent Rule with a friend.
Sometimes Cooperative Breeding can result in twins, one for you and the friend you bred with. Twins are special dragons that have unique heraldry to celebrate their special nature. You can only receive a maximum of 10 twins each time you log in, although you can keep more than 10 in the Social menu.
Rift Breeding
Rift Breeding at the Rift Breeding Cave follows the same rules as regular breeding with a few exceptions. To breed at the Rift Breeding Cave, the player must unlock the Rift Dimension. Rift dragons do not have incubation times, instead breeding costs Etherium.
Special Dragon Types
Legendary and Mythic Dragons
Legendary and Mythic Dragons cannot be bred and cannot breed. They can only be summoned.
Chrysalis Dragons
Chrysalis dragons are closed species; breeding from scratch must use two chrysalis dragons as parents.
Galaxy Dragons
Galaxy Dragons can only be obtained by breeding epic dragons or galaxy dragons with other players' galaxy dragons in the Cooperative Breeding Cave. Some galaxy dragons are much rarer than others, so you may need to search far and wide for these very special dragons by seeking out new friends.
Rift Galaxy dragons cannot be bred in the Cooperative Breeding Cave and can only be bred in the Rift.
Snowflake and Monolith Dragons
These dragons require two parents of the same element type in order to be bred.
Evolving Dragons
Certain dragons can only be obtained by transforming (evolving) existing dragons in your park. To summon one of these dragons, you'll need to meet all of the requirements listed in that dragon's Breeding Hint. Breeding Hints can be accessed by tapping on any of the breeding areas, then tapping on the "Breeding Hints" icon at the bottom of the screen, or by visiting the dragon’s page on this wiki. Once you have met all requirements to obtain one of these dragons, you can summon it using the steps below.
- Locate the dragon you wish to evolve and tap on it
- Tap the "Evolve" icon at the bottom of the dragon's info card
- In the pop up menu, tap to select the type of dragon you wish to evolve to, then tap the confirm button
- Tap the "Evolve" button to transform your dragon.
Breeding for an transformed/evolved dragon requires a matched pair as parents.
