Every time a dragon gains a level, it grows slightly, but significant changes occur at levels 11 and 20.
At level 11 primary and hybrid dragons become larger in size and an orb of its primary element appears above its head.
At level 20 primary and hybrid dragons become larger in size, and it receives a gold crown above its head which replaces the orb.
Below are examples of the element orbs and crown:
If an adult dragon between levels 11 and 19 goes through the Fountain of Youth it can look like a baby dragon with an orb.
If an adult dragon at level 20 goes through the Fountain of Youth it can look like a baby dragon with a crown.
Depending on the dragon, orbs and crowns are in different proportions to the the dragon's body.

- On December 2, 2011, dragon element orbs were introduced to the game with the introduction of silver shrines.
- On January 4, 2012, dragon crowns were introduced to the game with the introduction of gold shrines.
- As of March 21, 2012, Level 20 dragons receive crowns on top of the their head instead of the side.
- The Crypt Dragon initially didn't receive an orb when raised above level 10.
- This is a bug which Backflip Studios acknowledged here.
- This bug was fixed on December 4, 2013.
- When the Palladium Dragon was first released, it received an orb far above its head.
- This glitch was fixed on March 15, 2014.
- On November 15, 2013, Backflip Studios changed the appearance of the primary element orbs and crown.
